Alexander Prokhorov, a professor of behavioralk science and a smokinf prevention andcessation expert, will be part of a study fundede by the to promote health and stress managementg among the men and wome n in the armed forces. A $3.7 million grant was awardedf to M.D. Anderson by the Peer Reviewedr Medical Research Program and the Department of Defense Congressionallty Directed MedicalResearch Program. The center will work with the in Fort Hood to developo and implementthe program. Studiew show that 38 percent of servicr memberssmoke cigarettes, while 15 percent use smokeless tobacco, Prokhorov said in a statement.
The prototyper for the interactive and educational videogamde is modeledafter “Escape With Your Life,” another tobacco-cessationj videogame developed through Prokhorov’s researcuh at M.D. Anderson. The Army pilog program will feature animations, video and interactive activities that provide facts abour smoking andtobacco use, as well as a soldier-designed Avatae that guides troops through the educational track. Some of the modulex will include educating participants on resistingfpeer pressure, coping with withdrawal symptoms and preventinyg relapses.
